Celebrate 20 years of Kindling Words with us in the Lake District
of England...

M A R C H  1 4 - 2 1 , 2 0 1 2

After a full English breakfast, we’ll start each morning with a craft workshop to get the imagination burning. Then from 10 to 2 we’ll focus on our work. We will be provided with bag lunches so we can work in our rooms or out in the gardens, sit by the waterfall or at
the edge of a mountain looking over
the lake.

In the afternoons we’ll have optional field trips: rambling in the fells, visiting Wordsworth’s Grasmere, paying homage to Beatrix Potter’s cottage, indulging in “cream tea,” or visiting old bookshops and pubs. Our evenings will be spent relaxing at the Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa with our community of fellow children’s book creators.

In celebration of our 20th anniversary, those of us at the core of KW will emerge from the background and give a workshop on each of our specialties.

Marnie Brooks—author, poet, and photographer, will help us create evocative prose through haiku and photography, inviting our readers to participate at a deeper level.

Janie Bynum—picture book illustrator, will lead us on a visual expedition as we sketch and paint our surroundings. No visual arts skills required! (See page 3 for materials requirements.)

Mary Lee Donovan—a writer of fiction and picture books and Executive Editor at Candlewick, will share the inner workings of a smashing picture book.

Alison James—YA and picture book author and translator, will lead us on a powerful internal shamanic journey into the mind and world of our characters.

Tanya Lee Stone—author of picture books, narrative nonfiction, and YA fiction, will explore the importance of passion and its relationship to voice and authenticity in our work.
